About me

Biography

I was born in Kirkcaldy in the mid-1980s. For the first couple of years of my life I lived in Glenrothes, but have lived in Kirkcaldy ever since.

I was educated at Balwearie High School and the University of Edinburgh. My degree was in Economics and Politics. You can view details about my dissertation below.

Hobbies and interests

My main interests are in technology and web design. I am also a keen writer. Both of these interests emerged from my involvement in blogging and other online activities.

I am active in politics as a member of the Liberal Democrats. I also take an interest in the media and journalism.

I like to watch motorsports, particularly those involving open-wheel cars. Sadly, participating in sports is beyond my abilities, although I enjoy walking.

Among other genres, I like listening to experimental and electronic music. I also enjoy listening to the radio and podcasts.

One of my more obscure fascinations is with vintage television presentation, public information films and other aspects of mid-twentieth century culture. As such, I enjoy the emerging popular culture genre hauntology. I also have an interest in numbers stations.

Brushes with fame

I have appeared on BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Radio Scotland a number of times to discuss topics such as technology, politics and music. You can hear me discussing an edition of Scottish Roundup, the weekly digest of blogging that I run.

I have also been mentioned in motorsport journalist James Allen's book, James Allen on F1: 2009 - A Revolutionary Year for providing "fresh insight" into the McLaren 'liegate' scandal.

Work and experience

Web Editor - University of St Andrews

I am currently employed as the Web Editor at the University of St Andrews.

Campaigns Intern - Willie Rennie MP and Dunfermline Liberal Democrats

While I attempted to find a paid job, I spent a few months as an intern working on the campaign to re-elect Willie Rennie. I was involved in a wide range of activities including writing and producing literature, telephone and door-to-door canvassing and dealing with constituents.

Freelance - web development, political research, writing

Until finding full-time employment, I spent my time developing websites for small businesses and third sector organisations. I also did some research work on behalf of political consultants, and carried out administrative tasks for a small business.

Sales Assistant - Woolworths plc

My first job was at the late, great Woolworths. I worked there until the shop closed down. You can read about my experience of being on the front line while the business was going into administration in a series of articles I wrote about it.

Dissertation

I am sometimes asked about my dissertation. It was about the "paradox of voting", the phenomenon whereby economists and rational choice theorists struggle to explain why people vote.

If you are interested in reading it, I have published it online. For more information and to read it, visit Proposed solutions to the paradox of voting.
